Fact, rail slides are intimidating. Hitting that rail for the first time (or the 300th) is scary AF. But they’re also one of the most fun parts of snowboarding- once things click. The key is breaking them down, staying relaxed, and accepting that falling is part of the process. Here’s how to get into rails and actually progress- without wrecking yourself or your confidence. |
Actionable Tips for Snowboarding Rail Domination! |
Balance Drills: Before hitting the rails, perfect your balance on flat ground. Practice single-leg squats and board presses to build stability. A great tool is a foam roller- center it upder your board and balance yourself.
There are lots of practice rails available too. Use these to work on hops and get a feel for the rail. If youre handy, you can build your own out of 2x4s and large PVC pipe. |
Start Small (Seriously) Before you even think about handrails or kinked features, hit wide, low boxes or mellow ride-on rails. These let you focus on balance instead of survival. Speed should feel comfortable, not too fast, not too slow. Too slow? if youre not moving fast enough to make slide across teh feature... youre riding too slow. Go at a manageable pace and remember you can always add more later. |
Learn the Basics First Master these in order:
Once these feel natural, everything else gets way easier. Don’t rush the tech stuff. Style comes from control. Also: A clean pop is crucial. Focus on a controlled ollies. You'll need these to get onto the rail smoothly and keep your weight centered. |
When youre ready (i.e. mastered the above)- its crucial you look Where You Want to Go. Looking at your board or feet is a receipt for disaster. Your board follows your eyes. Look at the end of the rail. This helps you stay balanced and sets you up clean for the ride-off. Maintaining the Slide: Once on the rail, stay centered and look in the direction you're sliding. Let the board do the work. In time you'll be able to make subtle adjustments to keep your balance. |
Progress With Purpose Want to level up? Change one thing at a time:
Trying to do everything at once usually ends in a slam and a long park lap to rethink life.
Lastly, Have Fun With It Rails are about style and creativity. Everyone style is slightly different. Remember to laugh off the falls, hype your friends, and don’t stress making it perfect. Every clean slide started with a sketchy one. Stick with it, and one day you’ll realize rails aren’t scary anymore... ok they will still be scary but less so. |
