🏂 Snowboard SLANG 101(Updated)

Snowboarder hitting the half pipe

Think of this as your “talk the talk” guide to snowboarding. You've been riding for a bit now, you're linking turns, hitting small boxes, but when you start talking with local park rats or seasoned vets and they throw out terms like cab 540, direction twin, or tame dog you panic. Don't fret, we got you bro. Snowboarders have their own language a wild mix of old classics, borrowed skate/surf slang, ever evolving tricks, gear and social-media that get tossed around everywhere from IG to the lift. Plus some of it is just shit we throw around to sound cool.

So lets break it down into the must knows.

🌨️ The Snow & Conditions

  • Pow / Pew – Not new, just know they are teh same- Fresh fallen, untouched snow. The holy grail of riding days.

  • Freshies / First tracks- first runs on new snow- bragging rights included.

  • Blower / Cold smoke – Super light, feather-like snow that sprays everywhere

  • Hard Pack– Hard-packed, icy snow that’s fast but ruthless if you bail.

  • Tracked out – When everyone’s already chopped up all the good snow.

🤙 Action Words & Vibes

  • Send it – Go big, commit fully, no regrets!

  • Gnarly / Gnar – Extreme in any direction - could be sick, scary, or both.

  • Buttery- smooth riding style

  •  Huck -To throw yourself off something big with commitment and questionable regard for consequences.

🌀 Tricky Bits

Whether you’re hitting park features or spinning in the backcountry, here you go:

  • Fakie / Switch – Riding opposite your normal stance

  • Jib  – Tricks on metal/plastic features.

  • Butter – Pressing the tip or tail while spinning

  • 180 / 360 / 540 / 720 / 900 / 1080 / 1260- Literally the number/degrees spun.Yes, 1080 means three full spins. Fun fact: At X Games in Aspen 2025, Hiroto Ogiwara successfully landed a 2340 spin. That’s 6.5 full fucking rotations in the air.

  • Frontside - You rotate so your chest opens toward the downhill direction first.

  • Backside - You rotate so your back leads downhill first.

  • Cab- Fakie (aka switch) frontside spin.Example: Cab 540 = riding switch into a frontside 540. uhhhh what now?

  • Indy – Back hand grabs toe edge between the bindings. Classic.

  • Mute – Front hand grabs toe edge between bindings.

  • Method – Indy grab + tweak + style. The king of style grabs.

  • Melon – Front hand grabs heel edge.

  • Stalefish – Back hand grabs heel edge between bindings.

  • Tail Grab / Nose Grab – Exactly what it sounds like.

  • Japan / Seatbelt / Roast Beef – All grabs... just know they're all grabs.

  • Boardslide – Board sideways on a rail.

  • 50-50 – Going straight on the rail.

  • Pretzel – Spin one way onto the rail, spin the opposite way off. Brain melter.

🏔️ People- a few you've heard but may not know

  • Grom / Grommet – Young shredder with attitude and skills.

  • Kook – Newbie, someone just learning . Often used when someone does something stupid or doesn't know the rules.

  • Gaper gap: The visible strip of forehead between your goggles and your helmet. Sure sign of a kook.

  • Flatlander: Non mountain folk.

🗣️ Everyday Mountain Chat

These are the words you’ll hear while waiting for the lift, on the chair, or posting stories:

  • First Tracks – First down on fresh snow.

  • Session – A focused period of riding (park session, pow session…).

  • Après / Après-ski – Social post-ride drinks.

  • Bombing – Literally bombing down a run fast.

🆕 Some added Social Media Flavor

Social media riders (TikTok POVs, Instagram reels, etc.) have brought energy words into everyday lingo, like:

  • “Sendy” – A playful spin on send it, often captioned with fails or big hits.

  • Steeze/ Steezy – Style + ease. Effortlessly clean runs + tricks get this tag.

  • Puking / Nuking – Loud way to say it’s dumping snow out there.

🪵 Board to death- Gear talk

  • Camber – Traditional arch underfoot. Pop, power, precision.

  • Rocker – Reverse camber. Floaty, playful, pow-friendly.

  • Hybrid Camber – Mix of both. Most modern boards.

  • Torsional Flex – How much the board twists.

  • Longitudinal Flex – How much it bends tip-to-tail.

  • Pop – Energy return when you load and release the board.

  • Damp – Absorbs chatter at speed.

  • Chatter – Vibration at high speeds.

So now you officially know:

  • The difference between a tame dog and a huck

  • Never be a gaper gap

  • And that jib kids live on metal instead of air

You’re basically 75% snowboarder now. The remaining 25% is just about sending it!

Next time you’re on the lift, just casually drop:“Snow’s kinda tracked out, but I might lap the jib line and work on some tail press”

Even if you only know how to leaf down the hill… confidence is half the sport.

Now go forth, shred responsibly, and may your landings be clean and your clips be one-and-done. 🤘❄️

See you at après. 🍻
